With over 20 volunteers in 2024, we were able to excavate well over 800 roadside freshwater turtle nests at our prioritized hotspots in the Long Point Biosphere Region, spanning from Turkey Point to Long Point. Species found include Blanding’s Turtles, Northern Map Turtles, Snapping Turtles, and Painted Turtles.
Our animal care specialist, Lauren Nightingale is busy processing the hatchlings in our lab and we have prepared about 70% of hatchlings for release. Simultaneously we are also providing interpretation to a diverse audience of visitors to Eco-Adventures new welcome centre to explain road impacts on turtles and their vital role in our wetlands! Our volunteers then have the opportunity to take the hatchlings to optimal marsh habitat where their mothers came from.
